Unlike the lighter PSLV-XL used for the first mission, the LVM3 allows for a direct-to-Mars trajectory and a significantly heavier payload.

However, the mission's scope expanded again in 2024. The updated plan now includes a comprehensive suite of exploration tools: a rover, a helicopter, a sky crane, and a supersonic parachute, marking a transition from simple observation to surface exploration.

Technical Advancements and Capabilities

Mangalyaan 2 will employ aerobraking—a maneuver where a spacecraft uses the friction of a planet's atmosphere to slow down—to lower its initial apoapsis (the highest point of its orbit). This technique allows the satellite to enter a more suitable orbit for scientific observations and reduces the perigee (the lowest point of the orbit) to approximately 200 kilometers above the Martian surface.

Due to the increased power of the LVM3 rocket and the efficiency of aerobraking, the MOM-2 satellite is capable of carrying more than seven times the payload of the original MOM-1 mission.
