In 1937, Rabbi Shurkin invited Yitzchok Hutner, a renowned genius from the Lithuanian yeshiva world, to join the faculty and manage administrative duties. By 1942, the institution had grown to include a third-year post-high school program, with Shurkin delivering daily Talmudic lectures and four veteran scholars teaching the high school grades.
In 1943, Rabbi Hutner assumed a more prominent role, delivering monthly lectures to students in their fourth year of post-high school study and beyond. Due to Hutner's powerful personality and Shurkin's humility, Hutner served as the Rosh Yeshiva from 1943 until 1980. Rabbi Shurkin continued his daily teaching duties until his death in 1963.
Global Expansion and Successive Leadership
The influence of the yeshiva extended beyond New York in the late 1970s with the opening of a branch in Jerusalem. This branch was named Yeshiva Pachad Yitzchok (Fear of Isaac), taking its name from the title of Rabbi Hutner's published works.
Following the passing of Rabbi Hutner, leadership of the New York campus transitioned to his disciple, Aaron Schechter. Meanwhile, the Jerusalem branch was led by Rabbi Hutner's son-in-law, Yonason David, who also maintained a nominal role as co-head of the New York branch.
The leadership of the New York yeshiva has seen several transitions in recent years. After the death of Aaron Schechter in 2023, his son-in-law, Shlomo Halioua, took over.
