The AJS Group Era
The story begins in September 1987, when the West Yorkshire Road Car Company was sold to the AJS Group via a management buy-out from the National Bus Company. This transition involved Alan Stephenson, the former managing director of East Yorkshire Motor Services. AJS continued its expansion in April 1988 by acquiring London Country North East, which marked the final privatization of the National Bus Company's 72 subsidiaries.
Before the sale of London Country North East, the entity was divided into two separate companies: Sovereign Bus & Coach and County Bus & Coach. By August 1989, AJS shifted its focus, transferring operations in Leeds and Bradford to Yorkshire Rider. This led to the creation of three smaller, specialized companies: Keighley & District, Harrogate & District, and York City & District. Local services in York were later transferred to Yorkshire Rider in July 1990.

In August 1991, a new entity called Blazefield Holdings was formed through a management buyout of AJS. Owned by former directors Giles Fearnley and Stuart Wilde, the deal was valued at £2.2 million (approximately £5,060,000 in 2025). This acquisition included 12 depots, 300 vehicles, and seven of the eight remaining bus firms, including Sovereign Bus & Coach and Harrogate & District.
Blazefield quickly pursued a strategy of growth. In November 1991, they purchased Cambridge Coach Services and Lucketts of Watford (trading as Luckybus). In April 1992, Ingfield of Settle was acquired and merged with Northern Rose to create Ingfield–Northern Rose.

Harrogate Independent Travel, founded in 1986 by former West Yorkshire Road Car Company drivers to challenge the establishment, had been bought by AJS in 1989 and was eventually merged into Harrogate & District in 1993. Further expansion occurred in October 1996 when Harrogate & District acquired the Ripon operations of United Automobile Services, a subsidiary of the Cowie Group.
Diversification and Regional Shifts
By 1994, the group's fleet grew to approximately 380 vehicles. This growth included the purchase of Borehamwood Travel Services, which brought 22 AEC Routemasters into the fold; this company was later renamed London Sovereign. That same year, Ingfield–Northern Rose acquired Whaites Coaches of Settle.
In 1998, Blazefield established Huntingdon & District after purchasing Premier Buses from Julian Peddle. However, the group began streamlining its portfolio in 1999 by selling Cambridge Coach Services to Airlinks, a subsidiary of National Express.
Northern Expansion and Southern Exit
A major milestone occurred in April 2001 when Blazefield purchased Stagecoach North West's operations in Clitheroe, Bolton, and Blackburn for £13 million (approximately £24,405,000 in 2025). These were rebranded as Lancashire United and Burnley & Pendle. Shortly after, in August 2002, the Bolton depot was sold to Blue Bus and Coach Services.
Between 2002 and 2005, Blazefield systematically withdrew from Southern England. London Sovereign was sold to Transdev S.A. in 2002, Huntingdon & District to Cavalier Travel in 2003, and St Albans operations to Centrebus in 2004. The remaining parts of London Sovereign were sold to Arriva Shires & Essex in early 2005.
Integration into Transdev
The transition to a global brand began in January 2006, when the French operator Transdev acquired the Blazefield Group and its 305 vehicles. This merger paved the way for significant municipal acquisitions. In January 2007, Blackburn Transport was sold to Transdev Blazefield after 125 years of municipal ownership. This was followed by the acquisition of Northern Blue and Accrington Transport, adding 65 vehicles to the fleet.
Transdev continued to strengthen its presence in York by purchasing Top Line Travel and Veolia Transport in August 2008, and later acquiring York Pullman's local bus operations in February 2012.
Modern Era Acquisitions
In January 2018, following approval from the council, Rossendale Transport Limited was sold to Transdev Blazefield. This brought 102 vehicles and 240 staff into the group, supported by a £3 million investment in high-specification vehicles for the Bury, Rochdale, and Rossendale areas.
Recent years have seen a focus on airport and regional connectivity. In August 2020, Transdev took over the Leeds Bradford Airport network from Yorkshire Tiger, branding it as Flyer. By July 2021, Transdev completed the purchase of the remaining Yorkshire Tiger operations from Arriva, rebranding them as Team Pennine with a distinctive pink livery. Most recently, in December 2024, Transdev acquired the local bus operations of Reliance Motor Services, including eleven vehicles and seven routes.
